Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has filed a lawsuit against TikTok, alleging that the popular social media app has violated the state's child privacy laws. The lawsuit claims that TikTok has collected and disclosed the personal information of users under the age of 13 without obtaining parental consent, in violation of the Indiana Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.
The lawsuit seeks to prevent TikTok from collecting and sharing personal information of users under 13 without parental consent, and to require the company to delete any personal information it has already collected from such users. It also seeks financial penalties for the alleged violations.
"TikTok has repeatedly disregarded the law and put children at risk," Rokita said in a statement. "Parents deserve to know that their children's personal information is being protected, and my office will continue to hold companies accountable for failing to do so."
This is not the first time TikTok has faced legal action over its handling of children's personal information. In November 2020, the Federal Trade Commission reached a settlement with TikTok over similar allegations of violating children's privacy laws. The company agreed to pay a $5.7 million fine and to implement stricter privacy protections for its users.
